Spread the word!

I like stainless steel for thermos, but I never really liked it for water or cold drinks. Until now, instead of buying stocks of small water bottles to carry around during the day, I’d buy one every 7-10 days and refill it with filtered water.

Recently, I’ve been looking for a solution to avoid buying even those 3 or 4 little water bottles/months and this morning I found a 750ml BPA-free water bottle at Cirencester’s Waitrose (UK online shop: Reusablebottle.co.uk: Aladdin Clean & Clever Water Bottle, or click here to view other items).

Below I am reporting an article from TheDailyGreen.com that explains what BPA (Bisphenol A) is, the large number of items it can be found in and the dangers associated with this substance.

Aladdin is US-based company that sells a wide range of BPA-free products, bottles, mugs and other useful containers. Aladdin has an online shop, but I’m happy to see regular shops/stores are increasingly more sensitive to the subject. It makes it easier for consumers to find their desired products even outside of big cities, where there are certainly more choices. We all need some sort of container for drinks, snacks or our daily packed lunch. Then why not trying to avoid buying the same old plastic items and turn to ‘greener & safer’ products?

Even small changes in our eating habits can lead to big changes in economy. Besides, how many of these habits are really ours and how many are just the result of years and years of media and business influencing people’s choices? Think about it. After all, do we really need to eat pineapples at Christmas and oranges in August? And how many kids nowadays know seasonal fruits and vegetables? Maybe we should teach that in school, eventually, or people will believe tomatoes are perennials and bananas grow spontaneously in Alaska.

SPAGHETTI ZUCCHINE E GAMBERETTI “Spaghetti with zucchini and prawns”
(approx. 6 servings)

In a bowl:
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 white onion (diced)
- 3 medium sized zucchini (diced)
- 1 teaspoon of ground salt

Cook at medium heat until soft, then smash everything (like smashed potatoes) until a little creamy.

At medium heat, add:
- some cream (you can add as much as you want, or even don’t add it…)
- 2 or 3 medium sized zucchini (diced)
- 2 cups of cooked prawns
- a bunch of fresh parsley, chopped a little bit, not too much
- pepper

Cook at medium heat for approx. 10 minutes, till the zucchini are cooked.
In the meantime, cook the spaghetti in boiling, salted water.
Then add the sauce and freshly grounded pepper.

PASTA ALLA PIZZAIOLA “Pasta a la pizzaiolo”
(approx. 8 servings)

In a sauce pan:
- 3 cloves of garlic
- 3 tablespoons of olive oil

Warm a little bit, then add:
- 4 cans of “diced tomatoes in tomato juice”
- 1 teaspoon of ground salt
- 1 1/2 cup of capers
- 1 1/2 cup of black olives (diced)

Cook at medium heat until a little more than half the liquid is gone.

In the meantime, boil water… add 2 teaspoons of ground salt and add pasta (2 bags of short pasta, approx. 1 kg)
Cook the pasta 1 minute less the recommended cooking time (it has to be very firm). When the pasta is ready, strain it and put it in a big baking pan. Add the sauce, some oregano and mix.

Pre-heat the oven (medium heat). Put slices of mozzarella all over the pasta and bake it for a few minutes, just the time to have the mozzarella melt. Serve hot :D
